Why were the Yahoo
groups moved?
In brief, Yahoo deleted ALL 13 of my groups without notice and without an
explanation on July 31st, 2006, I had no choice but move (read: restart)
my groups
elsewhere. As of August 31st, 2006, I was able to re-open mock Yahoo groups to
redirect people to the new groups. In November 2006, due to the demands
of many who like the Yahoo interface, I re-opened the Yahoo groups for
membership, but I will not advertise those groups on my website or
elsewhere. Many of my old letters link to my old groups and I get a lot
of new members that are simply searching for Incredimail groups at
Yahoo. I do consider the Yahoo groups only sister groups to my main
groups. My main groups have no advertisements, and no size limits. My
main groups are hosted by my paid server,
and, unlike with Yahoo, I have rights! These group cannot be deleted for
'no reason' or as Yahoo pleases.
What Happened to the
old Yahoo groups anyway?
Yahoo told me that my email address was disabled/suspended, and that
then my Yahoo ID
completely deleted, all 13 of the mailing lists I owned deleted, my
Yahoo 360 profile deleted, and my website under yahoo/geocities completely
deleted because supposedly one of the groups I owned violated Yahoo's service
agreement. However, Yahoo
would not reveal what the violation was. Yahoo does say that accounts are only terminated in response to complaints.
But... the big question is, who in the world would complain about my Incredimail groups, my Special Mommy group,
my High School group and my EB news groups?
I read and re-read the TOS
and I could not see nor find what the violation was.
More than likely I am certain that Yahoo reacted after a complaint they
received by a certain someone who
has been very disrespectful and has had vengeance on her agenda for
months for something I am not directly responsible for. This woman has tried
numerous times to shut down a specific organization which I am a member
of and of which we were forced to
vote her out of, and since every attempt at shutting down the
organization itself has failed, now she is going after the board members
directly (me). She is known for writing rather lengthy emails with bold
characters, making absurd and outlandish false claims and such with her supposed 'facts', which nobody checked,
obviously. Everyone I've talked to told me this is totally 'up her ally'
and something everyone would not put past her and completely 'her
style'. As soon as everyone I know found out about this they blamed her
immediately, as there is no one else that would stoop this low.
This is another example of the right to free speech being
threatened in this country. This is scary, because nothing controversial was being
discussed in any of the groups at all. Yahoo provided no opportunity for me to defend “my
actions”
(whatever those actions might have been!), nor did they afford me the courtesy of informing me about the nature of the offense. I still do not know how I violated
Yahoo's policies. They simply deleted everything, without allowing me to retrieve important information I might have had stored
in my email account, website, the Yahoo Passport Information or allowing
myself and any of the over 1500 members of my mailing lists (700 in one
group alone!) to retrieve files
stored in the groups. Do people know that Yahoo owns their email and they have no rights to
it? Who needs extended storage space under those circumstances?
It's bad enough that Yahoo is censoring groups it doesn't like
(incredimail groups? GASP!), worse, these groups are innocuous, and worst
than that, it's denying any accountability.
It seems that Yahoo has become known for reacting to such complaints by arbitrarily deleting the accounts without any investigation or inquiry.
Why did I not get an
invite to the new groups since I was a member of the old ones?
Since the lists were deleted without notice, I could only invite those
who wrote me personally in recent months. I had no other email addresses
available.
Didn't you call Yahoo
and asked for an explanation?
The customer service person I talked to was very friendly and sympathetic. After putting me on hold several times to investigate,
she became extremely apologetic and explained that my only recourse was to send an email to a generic address
with my complaint. She stressed that there was no one available to talk to me and that there was no way to escalate the problem. Several subscribers have told me this is relatively common and Yahoo has never explained their actions or reversed their decision. Needless
to say the only response to my emails were automated generic ones.
Was anyone notified or warned that the list/email/website were at risk of being
disabled/deleted?
I was not warned, given an opportunity to retrieve the email addresses
of the members of any of my groups nor anything stored on the group or
anything off the website, nor notified that there was even an offense committed.
The entire website, and all the posts, links, stories, pictures, and other files are gone from
all 13 groups.
I will not support my
existing Yahoo groups (meaning, I will not advertise them in any way,
shape or form) nor will I open new Yahoo groups. The only reason I
keep my existing groups open is for the convenience of the members. Considering their customer service is all but
non-existent and they just delete groups, websites and email accounts without
notice and without merit, there is no reason anyone should be
comfortable there. You might consider moving from Yahoo before it decides it doesn't like what you have to say, either.
Thank You and Enjoy!
